COMMITTEE SPOTLIGHT

Section Keeps Tax Attorneys Up to Date

By By Richard L. Hunn

If your practice focuses on tax law, or if you have in interest in that area of practice, consider joining the Houston Bar Association Taxation Section.
The Taxation Section holds a monthly luncheon meeting from September through May of each fiscal year. The monthly meetings are held at the Downtown Club in the One Shell Plaza building in downtown Houston, typically on the third Wednesday of each month. At each meeting, a guest speaker addresses the Section on a tax law topic. Many of the Taxation Section’s members are also Certified Public Accountants, so the Section offers both Continuing Legal Education and Continuing Professional Education credit for its luncheon programs. Each year, the Taxation Section’s Council, which includes a tax law professor from each of the three local law schools, assists in developing the luncheon programs. The Taxation Section announces its luncheon programs in the Houston Bar Bulletin and by e?]mail announcements to its members. Attendance at the Taxation Section’s luncheon programs is not limited to Section members. To cover the cost of the luncheons, members who RSVP pay $27.00, and all others pay $32.00.
In addition, every year, the Taxation Section awards a $500 scholarship to a deserving tax law student at each of the three local law schools. The tax law faculty at each of the three law schools assists with this program. The Taxation Section has also, at times, made charitable contributions to worthy causes such as Habitat for Humanity.

For information on joining the Taxation Section, contact the HBA Membership Department
at 713-759-1133.

Richard L. Hunn practices with the firm of Fulbright & Jaworski L.L.P. He is the chair of the HBA Taxation Section.
